Children at Ysgol Maes Hyfryd, Cynwyd have been busy raising funds for a school in Nepal recently, and have been successful in raising £1071.49 to date.
Last year, the Deputy Headteacher Dilys Ellis visited Dahding, three hours journey away from Kathmandu, to forge close links with the local school, and the children at Ysgol Maes Hyfryd have since been learning all about the culture and history of Nepal during school lessons.
The Dahding school is located in a very poor area of Nepal, and currently the school does not have any running water.
The children of Year 5 and 6 at Ysgol Maes Hyfryd decided to raise funds for the Nepalese school and arranged a coffee evening and sent numerous letters asking for donations. They have also been in regular contact with a 14 year old boy at the school, and they are able to share experiences about their very different lives.
Mrs Ellis, along with Roger Jones, Headteacher of Ysgol Gellifor will be flying to Nepal again in March to present the school with the money, which will be used to install water supplies to the school.
Mrs Ellis said: "When we last visited Nepal, we could not believe that poverty on this scale existed anywhere in the world. We were touched by the plight of the children in Nepal, and we wanted to do all we could to help them. The children at Ysgol Maes Hyfryd have been very enthusiastic in their fund raising efforts, and pupils at Ysgol Gellifor have also been actively involved in the project. We hope that this money will go some way to improving the quality of life for children in Dahding."
